Massimo Garbini Named 2022 Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award Winner

The Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA) is pleased to announce that Massimo Garbini has been selected as the 2022 recipient of the Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award, ATCA’s highest honor and one of the most prestigious awards in aviation.

An aviation leader with more than 45 years of experience, Mr. Garbini has held top positions in air traffic management across Europe, including, Chief Executive Officer of Ingegneria Dei Sistemi, Managing Director of the SESAR Deployment Manager, and Chief Executive Officer at ENAV, and is presently ATM Executive Board Member at Frequentis.

Mr. Garbini began his career in the Italian Air Force as an air traffic controller where he covered all operational positions, including tower, radar, GCA, and approach. While in the Italian Air Force, he also worked at the air traffic control training center where he was responsible for the initial and advanced training courses. 

Following his active duty military service, Mr. Garbini began his career at ENAV where he spent 23 years. During his time at ENAV, he rose from an air traffic controller to the position of Chief Executive Officer. While at ENAV he also served as CEO and then Chairman of Techno Sky, an ENAV-owned company that completes technological infrastructure maintenance. Additionally, Mr. Garbini also served on the executive committee at CANSO and was also appointed by the European Commission as Chairman of the Network Management Board. 

In accepting the Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award, Mr. Garbini joins aviation leaders, including former FAA Deputy Administrator Dan Elwell, the Honorable Linda Hall Daschle, Delta’s Richard Anderson, former NATCA President Paul Rinaldi, the Honorable Jane Garvey, and the late former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta.

The Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award Banquet will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C. as a part of the ATCA Global Conference and Exposition
